Safiya - WIP

This is a panel from the short story Safiya, (you might recognize this panel from one
of my sketch book stories). For this short story, I started the inking process and I felt like
playing with some colour. Didn't plan it this way but I'm liking it so far, looking
forward to seeing how it all comes together.

A made up place

This is not an actual place but something I made up based on my memory
of seeing houses in Trinidad and I had some fun with this composition.

I'm a fighter!

Playing around with a character in my sketch book, I felt connected to this girl,
maybe because I've been told I can't do something many times and I usually fight
through the negativity to get to my goal. So yes, I'm a fighter, I don't give up!

I liked this little sketch for the energy of the lines and the boy
walking makes me feel like I'm walking with him too!

Memory Drawing - Going Home

On my way to pick up my son from school, I see students on their way home.
They are usually in a little group or walking in pairs. I was able to capture this
moment based on my memory.

Moving, Changing

I got to play with these three poses as I combined them to create movement. I liked
the overlapping of the lines, almost like creating action for animation, it's something I would
like to explore more. Although I've been drawing for some time I'm always amazed by
what I can do when I push myself to do something new, it pays off every time!

Drawing - fixing lines

One of the main things I like about charcoal is the easy way it can be
wiped away while drawing the figure. The angle of the hand and where the head
was located in this drawing were key things I needed to get right or it would
have looked very strange. Even though I drew the hand a couple times, the faded
lines that remained added some movement to the pose.

Safiya - a panel

I'm trying to keep this story short but there are some panels
I really like and want to include, this is one of them. I like the composition here
and the more I work out this story I think I'll know if I really need it for this comic.

Perhaps by now you know I love drawing certain things and one
of them are female characters. I like this character for the feeling I get
when I look at her; a waiting gaze, looking for answers.

A bus stop

A bus stop on campus at UWI, I did this one around mid-morning
so the contrast of light and dark was really good that I liked.

This short story, I've decided to name Safiya is coming along and this is a
character that is going to be part of the story. Everything I've been exploring and
working on for the past two years or so in my sketch book has brought me to this project.
I'm taking things a bit project at a time as I develop some new work.

A short story

For the past few weeks I've been building a little story that came
out of my sketch book postings. These are some panels I'm working out
and character studies. I haven't determined the length yet but I know
it is going to be a short story.

Little Feet

My son's little feet. I was able to capture these because he was colouring but that
only lasted a short time before he was doing something else. He will often ask me to
draw him when he sees me drawing in my sketch book but he never stays quiet for
these sessions because he's always anxious to see the final result before I could finish:)

Morning Sunlight

After I did my charcoal drawing of one of the trees on campus, I felt like I wanted to do some more drawing. I sketched this one while sitting on the bench and trying to avoid the stares I was getting as people passed by. Drawing in public made me feel uncomfortable sometimes especially if people made comments as they passed by and so far they have all been positive comments which has been encouraging. I didn't have my paint with me that day so I added colour to this sketch in my studio.

While having breakfast one morning on campus I saw this composition and I started to draw
before heading to class. I'm not sure if they were a couple or just friends but a lot was revealed
in the body language and the conversation was probably tense or emotional.

Drawing Body Parts

Sometimes I get really nervous about the work I post here even though I've been posting work for some years now. I think it's when I step out of my comfort zone a bit and then I make the decision to share those uncomfortable moments which then make me feel at ease with what I'm hoping to achieve. These particular drawings were done as an observation of body parts for a final collage I had to complete for my drawing class. Charcoal is one of those things I didn't really play around with until my drawing studio sessions where I used it every week. I became really comfortable using it and I was able to create some pieces that I liked and this one was one of them. The size of this drawing was 18' x 24''.

I drew this one while sitting in my studio at my window. It's the fence of the house
next to me and then across the street from me. It looked like a good composition and I
focused my attention on the areas that I felt were interesting. This was done with charcoal.

When I challenge myself to draw a different way or experiment with new tools (as in my Marks and Strokes project) I'm always surprised by the results. Gesture drawings are the best way I think to draw as free as possible and without restrictions. I force my mind to forget about what I think I should be doing and absorb myself in the process. Even though I've viewed these drawings I'm posting here a couple times they always look different to me after I post them and while I'm exploring things like line, tools etc. these things have been spilling over into my process as I develop my comics. This means that my work might look different to what I'm used to and it's one of the surprises I've embraced.

Designing a pants

I did a contour drawing of my favorite pair of jeans and I filled it in with this pattern. I didn't do
any preliminary sketches for the design, I just went with the flow. When I started to draw
I didn't stop till it was filled up. There is a certain rhythm that I get into when I'm
working on something and enjoying it and when I find the right flow I'm very productive.

Relaxed Posture

Every time I look at these drawings, I'm reminded of how much I enjoy
drawing the human form. I loved these a lot! It's also so good to take some time
to draw models in a studio whenever it's possible, I learn more and I can
apply what I've learnt to the development of my characters for my comics.

Quick Gesture

When I draw in gesture it helps to exercise and strengthen
my hand and eye skills especially if I'm drawing under a minute!

Some university boys sitting on benches near the cafeteria. They didn't really
sit still for very long so I had to get some drawing in fast. I like drawing this way
I focus less on every little detail.

Wednesday, July 5, 2017

I saw this girl having breakfast as I sat on the bench behind her to draw.
She was there for a little while so I took the opportunity to sketch her and
the strange thing is she never looked around once!

Tuesday, July 4, 2017

I like to draw different things and I like to use various tools when I'm drawing.
I drew this one with my left hand and it took some concentration to get used to it
and avoid just drawing with my right hand. This was done with soft pencils.

A little scene

A little charcoal drawing from my journal and a cat that entered my scene.
The tree in the background is a mango tree and the paw paw tree is in the foreground.

Everyday Things

Drawing everyday things like spoons and pots is always interesting to me.
A collection of things that are related in some way from my kitchen, I also didn't
arrange it in anyway, sometimes the best compositions are the unplanned ones.
